This is a great example of her negative space. My definite favorite piece of hers is called Eating the Moon. She uses negative space in a way that it can totally change the picture and make it much more interesting and exciting. ![]() She uses her negative space very well and here is what I think about how she activates negative space. Negative space is all the space around the subject of your art, in my research I have come across an artist by the name of Lora Zombie. Negative space is often looked at as an unimportant or nonexistent thing, but it really is quite a large thing in art. If it were just the girl on the blanket with the leaves then the piece would be very boring to look at, the negative space changes how you view this piece because it keeps it interesting and more fantastical and dream-like. It draws your eye because of its color, size, and asymmetry. This is activating the negative space in the piece because it is not symmetrical like the rest of the work. The corner of the rug turns into grass which then, below the rug, turns into a large spot of blue and green with a large plant growing out of the side of it. all of this is perfectly split down the middle of the page to show the symmetry of it. In her piece Fearful Symmetry we see a girl sitting on a blanket with a large circle of leaves above her head. Because the negative space draws your attention to itself, it is a very active and energetic negative space. The "craziness" of these spots draw your eye and get your attention. The negative space consists mainly of large spots of seemingly random colors and shapes. ![]() Her negative space takes up the majority of her work in almost all of her pieces. However, some artist are extremely good at activating their negative space and making you look beyond the main subject and to really look at and think about their work. It is often seen as less important or even insignificant. Negative space is the space that is not occupied by the main focus of the piece. I almost feel as if it is a comparison between the corporate or suburban lifestyle to nature or even simply outside, Regardless, Stewart's Between Two World's collection truly stimulated my understanding of how important negative space. These defeats the idea of a clash between nature and humans at least in this picture. There is a picture that doesn't focus on a human but rather a chair. The theme seemed obvious until I scrolled the bottom on the page. Nevertheless, the point is that without the negative space I would have missed the true focus of these pictures.Īfter further examining The Between Two Worlds pieces, I find that an element of mystery exists. This opens up endless possibility for interpretation such as something along the lines of the impossibility of suppressing our inner connection with nature. However, the negative space projects a shadow upon the wall, revealing the people or objects they hold as vines and leafs. Without the negative space, I can interpret this as someone pushing out their memories of nature and moving on. In the Between Two World pieces, Stewart portrays males and females shutting away what appears to be pieces of nature within a suit case. ![]() Kyle Stewart's work truly serves as a strong example to reinforce my contention. However, on many occasions, the background could have a deeper meaning than the focus of the art. For example, a background may just be perceived as a setting. ![]() The mind will notice reality aside from the focus of a picture that we don't quite acknowledge without deeper scrutinizing.
